Overview

The Massachusetts Aging and Mental Health Coalition (MAMHC) is a statewide membership organization dedicated to improving awareness of the critical problems elders face when experiencing mental illness, dementia or substance abuse.

MAMHC believes there should an exclusive coalition established around a single purpose: creating an elder mental health system in Massachusetts and assuring that all elders have full access to quality services. On the local and state-wide stage, MAMHC has gladly taken on a leadership role for frail elders believing there needs to be a buy–in from many advocacy groups, non profit providers, hospitals, nursing homes and especially elder consumers and caregivers. The coalition was formed in 1999 from the national efforts of SAMSHA and the AARP Foundation which went on to form the National Coalition on Mental Health and Aging. MAMHC had there first meeting at Bentley College in Waltham Massachusetts on October 21, 1999 with seed money from the SAMHSA and the AARP Foundation.
